De Indische Israëls Peter Lee because his remarkable body ofIsaac Israls, the greatest Dutch impressionist painter, was a painter of people and cities. Isaac, the travel enthusiast, always visited Amsterdam, The Hague, Paris, London, Florence and all those other cities in search of the pictorially interesting, the exotic. He had a great predilection for cabarets, circuses, fairs, revues and theater. It is therefore not surprising that in 1898 and 1916, when dancers and musicians from the then Dutch East Indies
