Interesting image.. my first thought was the dog almost looked post mortem or drugged, then I noticed the advertising line at the bottom in addition to being the photographer, T. B. Taylor was also a druggist, stationer and issuer of marriage licenses! I strongly suspect that the druggist in him couldn't resist giving the dog a little something (and possibly the kid as well) to keep them settled for their portrait
