200,000 Mark, Germany, 1923 Leaders but continued to use the200,000 Mark banknote of Germany, 1923. Germany suffered one of the worst phases of hyperinflation following its loss in the First World War, from 1923 24. This was caused by the debts Germany had taken on during the war, the occupation of Ruhr industrial belt by the allies, and the war indemnity imposed on Germany by the victors. Prices increased from one day to next, and sometimes in a matter of few hours. These notes were printed at a short notice
